Friendster
So karen has a new website to spend hours a day on, it's called Friendster! From what I can gather Friendster is merely an extension of junior high school, people trying to justify their existence by showing off how many friends they have and proving that they are cool by being just like everybody else. They then use this to make new friend that bond with them on their most superficial aspects. Now if you are using this as a dating service and just trying to get laid so be it, but the suggestion that this is to make real friends, as in the name, is laughable.
Included is a form to show off your personality, with such deep and meaningful questions as "Favorite Movie" and "Favorite TV show" WOW! How in depth! What is this the Teen Choice Awards? What no fav' music hottie?
Now I have nothing against having your little piece of the web to express yourself (what do you think this blog is?) but this friendster thing is about as expressive as paint-by-numbers. All I can see is people expressing a need to fit in. Maybe I'm just jaded from only being able to fill up 2 of the 4 blank pages in my high school yearbook and the picture of the curling team not getting me the respect that the football goons got, but this reeks of high school self-doubt and frankly I think it's a little sad!
